PDF Bookmarks

The bookmark feature in PDF files, often referred to as "bookmarks" or "document outline," allows users to quickly navigate and access specific sections or pages within a PDF document. Bookmarks serve as a table of contents or an interactive outline that helps users jump to specific sections or subsections of the document with a single click.

Viewing Bookmarks

To view the bookmarks in a PDF document, look for a navigation pane or tab labeled "Bookmarks" or "Outline" typically located on the left or right side of the PDF viewer. Some viewers might also display bookmarks in a panel that you can open and close.

Creating Bookmarks

Bookmarks can be created in PDFs using Publish by following these steps:

  • Open the Publish content item
  • Use the heading function to define the text as a heading

  • Bookmarks will indent according to the heading level used - heading 1, heading 2, etc.
  • Export the Publish item as a PDF
  • Select the add bookmarks option

  • Export the PDF document
  • Open the PDF document

The newly created bookmark will appear in the bookmarks panel.

Using Bookmarks

  • To navigate using bookmarks, click on the bookmark in the bookmarks panel. The PDF viewer will jump to the corresponding page or section.
  • You can expand or collapse bookmark sections to help you find the desired content more easily.
  • Bookmarks can be used to navigate large documents or manuals quickly, making it easy to access specific content without having to scroll through numerous pages.
